Sen. Susan Collins represents an exceptional element in American politics: a true moderate who has outlasted her opponents and angered both political extremes in an increasingly partisan environment. Enough voters who otherwise support Democrats regularly elect Collins, allowing the GOP to hold a seat that would otherwise be unattainable.
